We’re Marek and Marketa, the husband-and-wife team behind Souma Leather. Our journey began in 2015 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where we both studied and later worked. While Marek played basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, he had a growing passion for bikes. When he started working, he commuted on his vintage bike but struggled to find a leather bag that would match his style.
Marek’s interest in leather wasn’t entirely out of the blue. His father was a carpenter, and from a young age, Marek learned the value of craftsmanship. The skills he picked up from his father—attention to detail, patience, and working with his hands—became the foundation for the leather products we make today.
In 2015, when Marek was still living in the U.S., he started making leather. He couldn’t find a leather bag that fit his vintage bike, so he decided to make one. He knew absolutely nothing about leatherwork, but after countless hours spent watching tutorials on YouTube, he had a clear idea of what was needed: quality leather, a sewing machine, and a few basic tools. With this, he was ready to give it a try.
The first leather bag Marek made was in our living room, using a cheap domestic sewing machine. When that machine broke, we launched a Kickstarter campaign together to fund a better one. Back then, we started under the name “Bikegab.”
After moving back to Brno, Marek had to start over—completely. Even the terminology for leatherwork, which he had learned in English, was different in the Czech language, making the process more complicated.
He found an old industrial sewing machine at a flea market and set up his first workshop in the family house in Brno, where his dad has a carpentry workshop. The first few months were tough—sales had practically stopped, and Marek was still playing basketball professionally, so there wasn’t much time for production. But with orders from friends and small customer base, he pushed through.
Still playing basketball professionally, it wasn't feasible to balance both. Eventually he decided to ditch the basketball and start leather work full time. By 2017, Marek realized that to elevate his work and produce truly high-quality products, he needed a proper workshop. Luckily, a friend from basketball was preparing to renovate space for his bicycle shop, which was perfect for Marek’s growing needs.
In early summer 2017, after about six months of renovation, Marek moved into a new space. He began fully focusing on producing accessories for Brompton bikes, and that’s when things started to gain traction. Eventually, the business expanded, and Marek moved once again to better premises.
Marek’s younger brother Martin joined him for a while. Martin is now on his own career path, following in their father’s footsteps by pursuing carpentry.
In 2021, after years of hard work and growth, Marek moved into even larger workshop. While Marketa was always supportive behind the scenes, she officially joined Souma Leather in 2024 to take on the administrative and marketing roles.
Having a family-run business gives us the flexibility to balance our work and family life, which has become even more important as we’ve grown.
